David Altmaier Selected as New Florida Insurance Commissioner
Despite some concerns about his lack of experience, 34 year old David Altmaier was appointed by the Florida Cabinet as the new Insurance Commissioner for the State of Florida. He replaces outgoing Commissioner Kevin McCarty. Once a Cabinet-level position, the Florida Insurance Commissioner oversees the insurance industry, but now reports to the state’s Chief Financial Office.
The position is very significant. A good insurance commissioner can protect Florida consumers in areas such as auto, homeowners, health, disability insurance, and life insurance. Past Insurance Commissioners have been little more than insurance company mouthpieces. Time will tell if Altmaier can truly be a watchdog over the insurance industry or will pursue an agenda pushed by industry lobbyists. We are hopeful for for all Floridians that he will be protect insureds’ interests and pursue useful regulation of the insurance industry.
